The Story Of This Quilt
Agrilivado Bay by Louise Donovan.

Agrilivado Bay - Patmos
This is the painting that inspired my piece. In it, I could see Agriolivado Bay before Patmos was discovered by the sun worshippers who then needed the sun-loungers and sun-umbrellas, the pedalo boats and the taverna.

I could imagine it being painted from the side of the road that winds its way up to Kambos. The pinks of the wild flowers thrusting up at the wayside by the artist’s elbow are captured in the bottom left of the picture. A small boat is at rest in the bay. This is a painting in the naïve style.

When I look at my own reworking of this painting, I realize my abstraction has been shaped both by the style of the painting and my awareness of the power of the naïve primitivism of the St Ives painter, Alfred Wallis. My original plan was altered accordingly, as I worked.

This piece developed a life of it own. The most carefully planned of all in the Patmos Project – when sewn together there was the inexplicable need to “fudge”! Alterations happened throughout the piecing and I realized that this brought it closer to the naïve painting I used as inspiration. Possibly there is an Alfred Wallis influence behind it.
